$2.09

Popular pickling cucumber for the west. This variety produces uniform, prolific smaller cucumbers. Ideal size for pickling. Approximately 56 days to maturity. Can be grown on trellis or fence for support. Approximately 90 seeds per packet.

Availability: 63 in stock

SOWING: For an early start, sow seeds indoors 2 to 3 weeks before setting out. Plant in individual peat pots and cover with 1/4 inch fine soil. Sow seed directly outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and weather has warmed considerably. Indoor started seedlings can be transplanted outdoors after cool weather has passed also.

THINNING AND SPACING: In rows leave 8 to 12 inches between plants. Space rows 3 to 4 feet apart. When planting in hills, leave 6 to 8 plants per hill spaced 4 to 6 feet apart.

GERMINATION:   Approximately one week in 70° temperatures; longer cooler weather. Keep soil moderately moist during germination.

Ed’s Special Advice: Rich well drained soil is ideal for cucumbers. Processed manure or compost are excellent soil additives. Water deep and feed every 3 weeks. Can be grown on trellis or fence for support. Pick fruit carefully and regularly for continued harvest.

I grew this pickler last summer and I was extremely pleased with the results. The vines started squirting out in all directions as the summer proceeded, and nearly every inch, there was always another yellow flower ready to produce a new cucumber! They pickle great and produce like crazy. Definitely will be my go-to pickle variety from now on. They are also tasty fresh cut, so you can enjoy all those recipes and drinks that call for cucumbers all summer long.

Even in a small amount of space (one 3×5′ garden bed w/ arched trellis), I had so much success with these that I may have sworn off growing them ever again. Buckets of cucumbers. You’ll have to make new pickles every few days just to keep up. They’re also good fresh, but how many cucumbers can you reasonably eat? My coworkers and friends appreciated the bounty, but it might be too much unless you’re a pickle fanatic. Be forewarned.

how many seeds are in the package?

    • Hume Seeds

Approximately 90 seeds in a 3 gram packet of SMR-58 cucumbers, subject to fluctuations due to differences in each seed crop.
