SOWING: Start seed indoors or sow directly outdoors early through midsummer. Cover seeds with 1/8 inch fine soil.
SPACING, THINNING AND TRANSPLANTING: Space rows 2 to 3 feet apart depending upon space available. Thin or transplant healthiest seedlings 18 to 24 inches apart in rows.
GERMINATION: 5 to 10 days at 70 degree temperatures. Keep soil moderately moist during germination.
Ed’s Special Advice: Plant cabbage in sunny location where no cabbage or broccoli was grown the year before. Rich soil and regular waterings are to its liking. Cabbage rows may need to be covered with cheese cloth or agricultural netting if cabbage moths are a problem.
SEED SAVING: Isolate from all other brassicas to avoid cross pollination. Cabbages flower and seed second year of growth. Collect and open dry seed pods and store in cool, dry location.
