Watermelon – Sugar Baby

$2.09

A relatively early variety of watermelon. It is a small, dark skinned, round ‘ice box’ type, 7″ to 8″ in diameter. Its red-orange flesh is firm and sweet. Sugar Baby is drought resistant and well adapted to home gardens. All melons need ample heat and an adequate growing season to mature. Approximately 85 relative days to maturity.

Availability: 64 in stock

SOWING: Start seeds indoors or in a greenhouse 3 to 4 weeks prior to planned transplant. Cover seeds with 1/2 inch of fine soil in individual peat pots.

TRANSPLANTING: Be sure weather has warmed adequately before transplant in late spring. Harden off plants and employ cloches or light agricultural fabric to protect from cool night temperatures.

SPACING: In raised rows or hills leave 3 feet between plants. Allow room for vines to run.

GERMINATION: 10 to 20 Days. Keep soil warm and moderately moist during germination.

Ed’s Special Advice: Growing melons is a challenge in cool, short season climates. Select a warm, sunny location with southern exposure or against a heat retaining wall. Soil should be fairly rich, well drained and raised for extra warmth. Water plants when soil becomes fairly dry, preferably in the morning. Avoid over watering or spraying the foliage.
