Viola – Johny Jump Up

An old-fashioned favorite from grandmother’s garden. Miniature, pansy-like flowers that blend together some violet, lavender, yellow, and white in each face. Useful in shady areas, beds, borders, containers, rock gardens, when interplanted with spring-flowering bulbs, and as a cut flower.

SOWING: For earliest color, sow seeds indoors in early spring 6 to 8 weeks before last frost in flats or peat pots. Cover seeds with 1/16 inch fine soil. For later blooms sow directly outdoors in mid spring after danger of serious frost has passed. Seeds can also be sown outdoors in late summer or earliest fall in mild winter areas.

SPACING, THINNING & TRANSPLANTING: Carefully space plants 6 to 8 inches apart after danger of serious frost has passed.

GERMINATION: 10 to 20 days, seeds need darkness to germinate. Keep soil moderately moist during germination.

Ed’s Special Advice: Plants are easy to grow and prefer cool weather. Select a location in partial sun with rich, moist, well drained soil. Remove spent flowers for continued blooming Keep soil somewhat moist especially during hot weather. Can sometimes become a perennial in mild winter areas.
