SOWING: Plant seed directly outdoors from early spring through late summer. Cultivate weed free soil, mix seeds with a cup of sand or soil and broadcast lightly over planting area. Lightly rake into soil or barely cover to a depth of 1 /16 inch.

THINNING & SPACING: When plants are about 2 inches high, thin to 8 to 10 inches apart in all directions. Poppies do not transplant well.

GERMINATION: One to two weeks depending upon weather conditions. Keep soil moderately moist during germination.

Ed’s Special Advice: Sow seeds in a permanent sunny location with well drained soil. Some plants will bloom the first year from a spring sowing others the next. Remove or shear off old flower basses for continued flowering throughout the summer. Successive sowings will also extend the bloom period. After plants are established, water only as needed. They thrive on a certain amount of neglect.
