SOWING: Start seed early indoors or seed directly outdoors from early to mid spring. Sow again in late summer for fall crop. Cover with 1/8 inch fine soil.
THINNING: Seedlings started indoors can be planted outside after hardening off and danger of severe frost has passed.
SPACING: Leave 15 to 18 inches between rows. For intensified gardening, space 10 to 12 inches apart in all directions.
GERMINATION: Approximately 1 week to 10 days. Seed germinates best in cool 55 to 60 F weather.
Ed’s Special Advice: Keep soil moderately moist. Well fertilized soil produces quickly grown, sweet, crisp leaf lettuce. Sow seeds every two weeks March to August for continued harvesting. Lettuce grows best during the cooler part of the growing season.
SEED SAVING: Allow plant to flower, then collect seed heads as they dry. Store in a cool dry place.
