SOWING: Plant outdoors after danger of frost has passed and weather has warmed. Cover seeds with 1 inch of fine soil, firmed down, leaving 2 to 3 inches between seeds.
SPACING: Plant in roes or hills about 2 feet apart.
THINNING: When seedling plants are about 4 inches tall, thin to about 4 to 6 inches apart, leaving the strongest plants.
GERMINATION: 1 to 2 weeks depending upon soil and weather conditions. Keep soil moderately moist during germination.
Ed’s Special Advice: Beans grow best in a sunny location, where the soil is warm, loamy, and lightly fertilized. Support with poles, trellises, string, or a fence. Water deeply by soaking the soil. Make a Scarlet Runner Tepee for kids. Arrange bean poles in a circle leaning the tops together at the center. Leave an opening on the north side. Plant beans 2 or 3 to a pole on the outside. Walls fill in as the plants grow.
SEED SAVING: Let bean pods dry completely on the vine. Remove from pods and store in a cool, dry place.
