SOWING: Seed directly into the vegetable garden as soon as soil is workable in early spring through mid summer. Cover seed with 1/8 inch fine soil well pressed down.
SPACING: Rows can be 12 to 18 inches apart or closer if limited for space. Can be planted in wide rows 2 to 3 inches apart in all directions.
THINNING: When plants are about 2 to 4 inches tall thin to 2 inches apart.
GERMINATION: 2 weeks in temperatures of 60 degrees. Keep soil moderately moist during germination.
Ed’s Special Advice: Plant as you would other carrots in enriched well drained soil in a sunny location. Plants are vigorous and easy to grow. A real conversation piece in the vegetable garden. Sow a mixed radish row nearby, after carrots are established and starting to develop. Children will love harvesting the different colors and guessing which they will pull up next.
SEED SAVING: Carrots flower and seed in their second year of growth. After flowering, allow greens to brown, then cut from plant and hang to completely dry, up to two weeks. Strip seeds from flower heads and store in a sealed container in a cool, dry place.
