SOWING: Seed directly into vegetable garden as soon as soil is workable. Cover seeds with 1/8 inch soil.
THINNING: When plants are 2-4 inches tall, thin to 2 to 3 inches apart.
SPACING: Rows can be spaced 15-18 inches apart, or much closer if limited for space. In beds space 2-4 inches apart in all directions.
GERMINATION: 2 weeks in temperatures of 60 degrees. Keep soil moderately moist during germination.
Ed’s Special Advice: Plant at 2 or 3 week intervals for continual harvest. Planting can continue until mid-July. Carrots grow best in a sunny location with rich, light soil and regular thorough waterings. For best results fertilize and cultivate soil prior to planting to a depth of 6 to 8 inches.
SEED SAVING: Carrots flower and seed in their second year of growth. After flowering, allow greens to brown, then cut from plant and hang to completely dry, up to two weeks. Strip seeds from flower heads and store in a sealed container in a cool, dry place.
