SOWING: Seed directly into vegetable garden as soon as soil is workable in early spring through mid summer. Cover seeds with 1/8 inch fine soil.
THINNING: When plants are 2-4 inches tall, thin to 2 inches apart.
SPACING: Rows can be spaced 12-18 inches apart, or much closer if limited for space. Can be planted in wide rows 2-3 inches apart in all directions.
GERMINATION: 2 weeks in temperature of 60 degrees F. Keep soil moderately moist during germination.
Ed’s Special Advice: Sow carrots into enriched, cultivated soil kept fairly well watered. A novel addition to the garden and dinner table. Cooks nicely, slightly woody if eaten raw.
SEED SAVING: Carrots flower and seed in their second year of growth. After flowering, allow greens to brown, then cut from plant and hang to completely dry, up to two weeks. Strip seeds from flower heads and store in a sealed container in a cool, dry place.
