SOWING: Plant outdoors in late spring after weather has warmed and all danger of frost has passed. Plant 4 to6 seeds per pole in hills. Plant seeds on their side covering seed with 1 to 1 1/2 inches of fine soil firmed down.

SPACING: Provide 2 1/2 to 3 feet between hills. When planted in rows space rows 3 feet apart.

THINNING: Thin to 3 strongest plants per pole in hills, when they are about 4 inches tall. Thin to 4 to 6inches apart in rows.

GERMINATION: 1 to 2 weeks depending upon soil and weather conditions. Keep soil moderately moist duringgermination.

Ed’s Special Advice: Beans grow best in a sunny location, where the soil is warm, loamy and lightly fertilized. Cultivate shallow andfrequently until flowers appear. Avoid disturbing plants after that time, as it could cause the blossoms to fall off. Support with poles, trellis, string or fence. Water deeply by soaking soil. Pick when young for best flavor and texture.

Grew these 2020 season. Very pleased. Grew 6 teepees, 3 poles each on 3 foot mounds. 54 plants total. I am still harvesting on Sept 21 (2.9 lbs). Very prolific, averaging 2-3 lbs per day since about Aug 13 in North SnoCo zone 8a. Had to seed and reseed about 4 times with the exceptionally wet Seattle spring. These are super healthy vigorous vines. Highly recommend. I grew Nasturtiums at the bases and they took all the aphid attacks and saved my vines from damage. They never even missed a beat with our 4 days at 100 degrees. Flavor is very green bean fresh, no strings, super crunchy, gorgeous green. Will grow every year. I grew up watching Ed Hume and appreciate the PNW legacy in my adult garden.
