This delicious and nutritious chard is also very attractive and can be grown in the landscape. It has bright yellow-orange stalks and rumpled dark green leaves. Use as you would spinach in salads, stir-fries, or for steaming. Approximately 60 days to maturity.

SOWING: Sow seeds directly into the garden as soon as soil can be worked in early through mid-spring. Cover seed with 1/2 inch of fine soil.
SPACING: Leave 18 to 24 inches between rows.
THINNING: When seedlings are 3 to 4 inches high, thin to 8 to 12 inches apart.
GERMINATION: 1 to 2 weeks, depending upon soil and weather conditions. Keep soil moderately moist during germination.

Ed’s Special Advice: This is one vegetable that can be grown in the landscape because of its decorative value. Can be grown in containers, borders, or the vegetable garden. Start cutting outer leaves when plants are about 8 inches tall for extended harvest, new leaves will grow out from the center. Plants grow best in relatively moist, fertile soil. Grow during the cooler part of the growing season. Plant in late summer for fall crop. Use leaves from young, thinned plants in salads.

SEED SAVING: Biennial. Chard will flower and produce seeds after overwintering. Harvest flower stalks when two thirds of the seeds are brown. Store in cool, dry place.
