SOWING: Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep, directly outdoors, after danger of frost has passed. Seed can be started indoors in individual peat pots 3 to 4 weeks before setting out.
THINNING AND TRANSPLANTING: Carefully thin or transplant young seedlings to about a foot apart in all directions within the planting area.
GERMINATION: 10 to 15 days. Keep soil moderately moist during germination.
Ed’s Special Advice: Plant sunflowers in a sunny location in somewhat fertile and well-drained soil. Keep soil weed-free and moderately moist while flants are young. Once established, plants are somewhat drought and heat tolerant. Will flower mid-summer through fall. Birds are attracted to the seeds.
