SOWING: Seeds directly in the garden in late spring through early summer when all danger of frost has passed and weather has warmed. Plant seeds 1/2 inch deep covering with fine soil.
SPACING: Plant about 6 seeds per hill spaced 3 to 4 feet apart or space rows 3 feet apart.
THINNING: When plants are 3 to 4 inches tall thin to 3 sturdiest plants per hill. In rows thin plants to 18 inches apart.
GERMINATION: 1 to 2 weeks depending upon weather. Keep soil moderately moist during germination.
Ed’s Special Advice: Plant in sunny location in rich, well-drained soil. Keep fairly well watered and fertilize monthly, but avoid constant overwatering and continual use of high-nitrogen fertilizers. An outstanding easy to grow summer squash. For continued harvest, pick fruit regularly when young.
SEED SAVING: Allow squash to fully ripen on vine. Remove seeds from squash and ferment in seed/water/squash mixture for 2 days. Clean with water and dry for multiple days. Store in cool, dry place.
