SOWING: Plant outdoors in late spring after weather has warmed and all danger of frost has passed. Plant seeds in hills sowing seeds 4 inches apart, 6 to 8 seeds per hill. Cover seed with 1/2 inch of fine soil firmed down. For earlier crop start seeds indoors 2-3 weeks before setting outside.
SPACING: Leave about 4 feet between hills; space rows 4 to 6 feet apart depending upon available space.
THINNING AND TRANSPLANTING: When new plants are about 4 inches tall carefully thin or transplant to 3 healthiest plants per hill.
GERMINATION: Approximately one to two weeks depending upon weather and soil warmth. Keep soil moderately moist during germination.
Ed’s Special Advice: You can plant pumpkins between rows of corn, to conserve space. Vines can also be grown between shrubs in landscape beds. Grows best with full sun in fairly rich, well drained soil. Jack O’Lantern pumpkins start out green and gradually turn orange as they mature.
SEED SAVING: If planted near other squash, may cross pollinate. Allow squash to fully ripen on vine. Remove seeds from squash, clean with water and dry for multiple days. Store in a cool, dry place.
