SOWING: Start seeds indoors or in a greenhouse 3 to 4 weeks prior to planned transplant. Cover seeds with 1/2 inch of fine soil in individual peat pots.
TRANSPLANTING: Be sure weather has warmed adequately before transplanting in late spring. Harden off plants and employ cloches or light agricultural fabric to protect from cool night temperatures.
SPACING: In raised roes or hills, leaving 3 feet between plants. Allow room for vines to run.
GERMINATION: 10 to 20 days. Keep soil warm and moderately moist during germination.
Ed’s Special Advice: Growing melons is a challenge in cool, short-season climates. Select a warm, sunny location with southern exposure or against a heat-retaining wall. Soil should be fairly rich, well-drained, and raised for extra warmth. Water plants when soil becomes fairly dry, preferably in the morning. Avoid over watering or spraying the foliage.
