SOWING: Start seeds indoors in March or April. Or, sow directly outdoors after all danger of frost has passed. Plant in the sunniest spot of the entire garden. Barely cover seeds with 1/16 inch of light soil. Firmly press seeds into soil. Cover flat or planting bed from light until seeds begin to germinate. Seeds need darkness to germinate. As soon as the seeds have germinated, uncover and provide plenty of light.
THINNING AND TRANSPLANTING: Plant or thin to 6-9 inches apart, when seedlings are one to two inches tall.
GERMINATION: Approximately 2 to 3 weeks, or longer.
Ed’s Special Advice: This colorful annual needs full, bright sun. Soil should be well drained and not too fertile. Water sparingly throughout growing season. Ideal annual for rockery plantings, containers, hillsides, and as summer annual ground cover.
