SOWING: Sow from early to mid spring at 2 weeks intervals and again in early fall. Cover seed with 1/8 fine soil.
SPACING: Sow seeds 1 to 2 inches apart in rows of 6 to 12 inches apart.
HARVESTING: Harvest with scissors about 1 inch from soil line when leaves are 4 to 6 inches tall. Many varieties will grow back for additional harvests.
GERMINATION: Approximately one to two days. Keep soil moderately moist.
Ed’s Special Advice: Most components of mesclun grow best during the cooler parts of the growing season. Sow in a mostly sunny spot in fairly rich, well-drained soil kept somewhat moist. Mix includes leaf lettuces, kale, endive, beet greens, spinach, swiss chard, radicchio, and mustard depending upon availability. Make sure you only eat the plants you can identify from the above list.
SEED SAVING: Allow plant to flower, then collect seed heads as they dry. Store in a cool dry place.
