SOWING: For early start, seed indoors in individual peat pots in early spring. Seed outdoors when danger of severe frost has passed. Cover seeds with 1/8 inch fine soil firmed down.
SPACING: Space rows 16 to 18 inches apart.
THINNING AND TRANSPLANTING: When seedlings are 2 to 3 inches high, thin or transplant 6 to 8 inches apart.
GERMINATION: 10 to 14 days depending upon soil and weather conditions. Keep soil moderately moist during germination.
Ed’s Special Advice: Grows best in rich moist soil. For best flavor and texture, harvest bulbs when 2 to 2 1/2 inches across, cut stems at soil level. Excellent for successive plantings and fall crops. Seed outdoors early to mid spring and again in late summer. Can also be planted in the landscape for an unusual look.
SEED SAVING: Biennial. Overwinter and isolate from other brassicas during second year. Allow seed pods to dry and ripen before harvesting. Store in a cool, dry place.
