Carrot – Black Nebula

An attractive, dark purple “black” carrot. Its deep purple color goes all the way through the carrot and keeps its color after cooking. It grows and tastes just like a regular carrot. It can be eaten fresh, roasted or steamed. Approximately 75 days to maturity. Approximately 300 seeds per packet.

SOWING: Seed directly into vegetable garden as soon as soil is workable in early spring through mid summer. Cover seeds with 1/8 inch fine soil.

THINNING: When plants are 2-4 inches tall, thin to 2 inches apart.

SPACING: Rows can be spaced 12-18 inches apart, or much closer if limited for space. Can be planted in wide rows 2-3 inches apart in all directions.

GERMINATION: 2 weeks in temperature of 60 degrees F. Keep soil moderately moist during germination.

Ed’s Special Advice: Plant as you would other carrots in enriched, well drained soil in a sunny location. A real conversation piece in the vegetable garden. Rich in vitamins and minerals. Use purple tinged umbels for dried flower arrangements when carrot plant goes to seed.

SEED SAVING: Carrots flower and seed in their second year of growth. After flowering, allow greens to brown, then cut from plant and hang to completely dry, up to two weeks. Strip seeds from flower heads and store in a sealed container in a cool, dry place.
