SOWING: Start seeds indoors or in greenhouse in early spring, or plant directly outdoors in mid-spring. Cover seeds with 1/4 inch fine soil.
THINNING AND TRANSPLANTING: Transplant seedlings indoors after first pair of true leaves have developed. Space them 4 inches apart or pot them individually in 2 1/2 inch pots. Once plants are established, harden off and transplant outdoors after severe frost danger has passed, from early to mid spring.
SPACING: Space rows 2 to 3 feet apart depending on space available. Space plants 18 to 24 inches apart in the rows.
GERMINATION: Indoors in 70 degree temperatures, seeds take about 10 days to germinate.
Ed’s Special Advice: Plant cabbage in sunny location where no cabbage was grown the year before. Rich soil and regular waterings are to their liking. Delicious and rich in vitamins and minerals. Protect from cabbage moths with agricultural netting.
SEED SAVING: Isolate from all other brassicas to avoid cross pollination. Cabbages flower and seed second year of growth. Collect and open dry seed pods and store in cool, dry location.
