SOWING: Start seeds indoors in late winter through early spring. Sow in trays or flats, firm seed into soil with the back of hand. Do not cover seed with soil as it needs light to germinate.
THINNING AND TRANSPLANTING: Thin or transplant seedlings to 2 inches apart when 1 inch tall or pot individually.
SPACING: Leave 10 to 12 inches between plants outdoors.
GERMINATION: 10 to 12 days at 70 degrees. Keep soil moderately moist during germination.
Ed’s Special Advice: Prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil. Plants can be moved in the fall for use indoors as winter houseplants. Pinch center stem when plants are 4 to 6 inches tall for bushier growth. Pick off flower heads as they form. Leaf color is best when planted in a semi-shady spot.
