SOWING: Start seeds indoors in early spring. Cover seeds with 1/8 inch of fine soil.
THINNING AND TRANSPLANTING: Thin to 2 inches apart when seedlings are 1 to 2 inches high. Transplant established seeding plants outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Plant in sunny spot, where soil is well-drained.
SPACING: Plant about 12 to 15 inches apart, for mass planting effect.
Ed’s Special Advice: This colorful annual often winters-over (save tubers) to become a permanent perennial plant. Start seeds indoors in February or March for earliest outdoor bloom. Submerge stems in hot water after cutting them at an angle, and flowers will last for days.
