Spinach – New Zealand

$1.99

New Zealand is not a true spinach but is very popular for growing during warm summer weather, when regular spinach can “bolt”. A heavy yield can be harvested throughout the summer. It is very high in vitamin content. Use as you would regular spinach. Approximately 70 days to maturity.

Approximately 60 seeds per packet.

Availability: 48 in stock

SOWING: Sow seed directly outdoors after danger of serious frost has passed from mid-spring to early summer. Cover seeds with 1/2 inch of fine soil.

SPACING: Space rows up to 2 feet apart depending upon space; plants will “sprawl”.

THINNING: When seedlings are 3 to 4 inches high, thin to about 12 inches apart.

GERMINATION: 1 to 2 weeks depending upon weather. Keep soil moderately moist during germination. New Zealand spinach is a rather low germination rate seed.

Ed’s Special Advice: Soak seed 24 hours prior to planting using warm water. For second crop seed again in early summer. Mulch with straw to protect leaves for late fall harvest. Continually harvest top 3 or 4 inches of stems and leaves of established plants as the shoots grow back.

SEED SAVING: Allow seed pods to brown before picking. Store in a cool, dry place.
