SOWING: Sow seeds indoors in early spring, 8 to 10 weeks prior to planting outside, in flats or individual peat pots. Cover seeds with 1/8 inch fine soil. Provide with plenty of light.

GERMINATION: 10 to 20 days depending upon soil warmth. Keep soil moderately moist, using warm water.

THINNING AND TRANSPLANTING: Carefully thin or transplant young seedlings from flats into pots when about 3 inches tall. Transplant established individually potted plants outdoors after hardening off, well after last frost and weather has warmed considerably.

SPACING: Leave about 2 feet between plants in rows about 3 feet apart.

Ed’s Special Advice: Grow in the hotter part of the garden as you would tomatoes and peppers. Fertilize monthly and water regularly for best crop. Plants are attractive enough to use in the flower garden or landscape as an ornamental. Harvest when fruit is 6 to 8 inches long, when mature the skin should not spring back when pressure is applied with your thumb.
