SOWING: Indoors in late winter or earliest spring. Barely cover seeds with fine soil. Water seed by misting soil. Seed can be sown again in late summer to early fall in mild winter areas for blooms the following year.
THINNING AND TRANSPLANTING: Thin to 3 inches apart when plants are one inch high. Plant outdoors in late spring.
SPACING: Plant 6 inches apart outdoors.
GERMINATION: 10 days in 70 degree temperatures. Reduce soil temperature immediately after germination so seedlings don’t stretch. Will produce flowers in 12 to 16 weeks if started indoors.
Ed’s Special Advice: They will grow and flower best in partial sun and shade. Prefers rich soil kept moderately moist. Keep dead flowers picked. Protect from coldest weather with cold frames or a light mulch. Combines well with spring bulbs and shade tolerant annuals.
