SOWING: Sow seeds outdoors after danger of frost has passed, or start seeds indoors in flats or pots. Cover seed with 1/8 inch fine soil.
SPACING: Leave about 12 to 18 inches between rows or use in group plantings.
THINNING AND TRANSPLANTING: When seedlings are about 2 inches tall, thin or transplant to 8 to 10 inches apart. Transplant indoor started seedlings after danger of frost has passed.
GERMINATION: 2 to 3 weeks depending upon weather and soil conditions. Keep soil moderately moist during germination.
Ed’s Special Advice: Plants make a colorful addition to flower gardens and grow well in containers. Basil grows best in a sunny location in rich, moist, well-drained soil. Pinch back plants to encourage bushiness and to harvest small amounts as plants grow. Use leaves fresh or dry them in a well-ventilated room.
SEED SAVING: Allow plant to flower, then collect florets as they dry. Crush fully dried florets to harvest seeds. Store in a cool dry place.
