Oriental Poppy

Perennial - Permanent Plant - Height 3ft

Large, showy cup-shaped flowers are borne on sturdy stems above coarsely cut, hairy foliage.  Plants grow best in mostly sunny areas with well drained soil.  Works well at the back of informal, mixed flower beds.  Blooms from late spring through early summer, when started the previous year from seed.

Special Directions for Short Season Climates

SOWING: Seed can be sown directly in place from spring through early fall.  Do not cover seed, firm into soil with the back of your hand. Seed can be sown into flats or individual pots for later transplant.

TRANSPLANTING AND SPACING: Care must be taken during transplant.  It has a long carrot like tap root.  Try to retain considerable soil around plant and roots and water well right after transplant.  Leave about 12 to 18 inches between established plants.

GERMINATION: Two to three weeks.  Keep seedbed moderately moist during germination.

Ed's Special Advice

One of the most spectacular flowering perennials grown from seed.  It is well worth the initial trouble getting it started.  Avoid overhead watering.  For cut flowers, select buds just as they start to open.  Cut stem and sear with flame.
