PEAS Tacoma Afila Type Bush An early afila type pea, which means a plant with few leaves but many tendrils that help support it by locking onto neighboring plants. The sweet and tender peas are right at the top of the plant for easy harvest. A great pea for wide row intensive planting. Tacoma is resistant to many pea diseases and earlier than other peas of this type. Approximately 63 days to maturity. Special Directions for Short Season ClimatesSOWING: Sow directly into the garden from early through mid spring. Peas can be sown again in midsummer for a fall crop. Sow seeds 2 inches apart in rows and 1 inch deep. SPACING: Plant 2 to 3 rows 4 to 6 inches apart. The tendrils will interlock with neighboring plants eliminating the need to trellis the vines or provide any other support. GERMINATION: Completely dependent upon outdoor temperature and soil warmth, usually 1 to 2 weeks. Ed's Special Advice Tacoma needs no twine or staking. When possible, plant rows in north-south direction for best sun exposure and air circulation. Water at base of plants and keep soil fairly moist throughout growing period. Keep peas picked regularly for best flavor and texture. Tacoma is a real conversation piece in the garden.
