ONION Italian Red Torpedo An Italian heirloom variety, its skin is reddish-purple in color. Elongated in shape, the bulbs resemble a torpedo or spindle. Its flesh is sweet, mild and tender with light rose colored rings. Approximately 120 days to maturity. Special Directions for Short Season Climates SOWING: Sow indoors in flats in early spring or sow seed outdoors a soon as soil is workable. Cover seeds with 1/4 inch fine soil. Leave 6 to 18 inches between rows. Can be spaced 6 inches apart in all directions for intensified solid be plantings. THINNING & TRANSPLANTING: When seedlings are about 4 inches tall, thin or transplant 5 to 6 inches apart. GERMINATION: Usually 10 to 15 days depending upon soil and weather conditions. Keep soil moderately moist during germination. Ed's Special Advice Best results are obtained when onions are planted in well-fertilized moderately moist soil. At maturit~ bend over tops to hasten ripening before they are harvested. Pick out seed heads as they form. Use onions from the ground fresh, they can be stored indoors for a short amount of time.
