ALPINE POPPY Papaver alpinum Perennial - Permanent Plant - Height.- 8 to 10 inches Alpine poppy is native to mountainous central Europe. It is low growing and well suited to growing in pots and containers as well as borders and rock gardens. It's dainty 1 1/2" white, pink, yellow and orange flowers are borne on wiry 6" stems above lacy blue green foliage. Special Directions for Short Season Climates SOWING: Sow seeds directly outdoors in early spring after danger of severe frost has passed. Can also be sown into permanent location containers. Barely cover seed with 1/16" fine soil firmed down. THINNING & SPACING: Thin seedlings 4 to 6 inches apart when 2 inches high. GERMINATION: Somewhat slow, allow two to three weeks. Keep soil moderately moist during germination. Ed's Special Advice Grows well in cool climates. Poppies do not transplant well, sow in place for best results. Well drained, average garden soil in an area with full sun, are ideal conditions for Alpine poppies. Thrives on a certain amount of neglect, do not fertilize or over water established plants. May bloom the first year from early spring sowing.
